Graduated within the last 3 years?
If you graduated from The University of Manchester or UMIST within the last 3 years you are entitled to use the full range of services at the Careers Service, including use of the Careers Resource Centre, events and careers appointments.
You will be asked questions when you book an appointment to check your eligibility and availability and to allow us to decide which Careers Consultant you need to speak to. This is not meant to be an interrogation but to check what type of appointment would help you most and try and ensure you see someone who is going to be able to help you! There are 3 types of careers appointment available:
1. Guidance appointments
Ideal if you are utterly clueless about what you want to do, if you want to explore some ideas, or you know where to want to get to but need some help getting there. Don’t worry we won’t tell you off!
If you cannot visit Manchester to talk to a Careers Consultant you can have a guidance appointment by phone. You book the appointment in exactly the same way but call us at the start of the appointment to talk to the Consultant.
More about guidance appointments and how to book.
2. Quick Query
Suitable for quick questions and for getting feedback on application forms, CVs etc.
Quick query slots are 15 minutes long. They can only be booked on the day and you are limited to one per day – don’t be greedy!
Session times vary according to the time of year.
3. Practice Interviews
Test your technique! The Careers Consultant will pretend to be an interviewer and then give you feedback on how you answered the questions they threw at you. Only available once per person, and you can only book when you have a real interview coming up.
These need to be pre-booked in the same way as a guidance appointment. Availability will vary according to the time of year so if you want a practice interview call us as soon as you are invited to an interview. Sometimes interviews happen at very short-notice so it is not always possible to get a practice interview – sorry if we can’t help you, but we promise to try our best.
Help by e-mail
We will always try our best to help you via e-mail, to do this we need as much information as possible. It is difficult, for example, to help someone who says ‘I am interested in careers in law’ because we have no idea what you want to know. Do you already have a law degree or are you thinking of taking a conversion course? Do you want to be a solicitor or barrister? You can help us help you by giving us an idea of how much you already know and what are you trying to find out.
We can offer advice on applications however there are some things to bear in mind…
- Use the resources available on the website to improve your application as much as you can on your own before e-mailing. That way we can concentrate on the fine-tuning.
- Application advice will take up to 5 working days via e-mail – don’t leave it till the last minute!
- Advice by e-mail can never be as thorough and useful as getting help face-to-face – visit if you can.
Graduated more than 3 years ago?
Some services are open to you for life. You are still able to use the Careers Resource Centre, the Quick Query sessions and attend most events but you cannot have a guidance appointment or a mock interview.
Graduated from a different university?
We offer limited services during university vacations for a small fee to graduates of other UK universities within the last three years. We cannot offer any advice services to graduates of overseas universities, but you could buy an access card for the public if you want to use the Careers Resource Centre.
