This blog aims to give tips to graduates of The University of Manchester (and indeed anyone else who cares to read it) about everything to do with moving on after your degree. Whether you have just graduated or have returned after a period of travel or temping, or perhaps you have a job and are now thinking of making a change there will be something for you.
The bloggers
My name is Anna Lomas and I work as an Employer Liaison Manager at the University of Manchester’s Careers Service.
I joined here straight after Nottingham Uni, where I studied English. I’ve been here for nearly 10 years and I love my job, which mainly involves dealing directly with a whole range of graduate recruiters, organising big careers fairs and events, marketing the Careers Service and loads more. I also look after our mentoring scheme – Manchester Gold – and our brand new initiative for you, our grads, The Manchester Graduate Internship Programme.
My specific areas of interest are the creative industries and the Media – but through my work, I find out about what employers in all areas are looking for and how you can get jobs with them!
My name is Delia Goodwin and I work as a Careers Consultant at the University of Manchester’s Careers Service.
I have responsibility for working with students and graduates from the Humanities Faculty plus Psychologists. One of my main areas of interest is in the teaching profession so I get a lot of queries from people keen to find out more about this.
I’ve worked here for nearly eight years now- (blogs weren’t in existence back in those days!) and prior to this worked as a Careers Adviser with 14-19 years olds in the Rochdale area. Going back even further I graduated from Leeds University with a degree in English. Completed a PGCE in English and TEFL from Cardiff University then spent seven years teaching English in two secondary schools… also had a spell working in a residential unit for young people about to leave the care system.
Decided that I wanted to specialise in careers guidance so embarked on a Post Graduate Diploma in Careers Guidance at Manchester Metropolitan; and eventually landed here at the University of Manchester.
Holly (Careers Service)
My name is Holly Seager and I am one of the Information Managers at The University of Manchester Careers Service. I joined the Careers Service nearly 9 years ago.
I graduated in History from the University of Essex before working in the newspaper archive of The British Library for 3 years helping visitors to use the archive and researching subjects for remote users. During the last 2 years of this post I also studied part time for an MA in Information Management. When I completed the MA I moved to Manchester.
My role is to work with my team to organise and update the Careers Resource Centre and to research and write large sections of the Careers Service website. We are the first point of contact for users of the Careers Service in person, by e-mail and by phone. We help students and graduates to find the most appropriate services and advise them about their careers research.

Hi,
I wanted to let you know that this week is the last chance for any students or recent graduates to enter the CG Whiz competition for a fantastic opportunity to get started in the world of visual effects.
Throughout October we’ve been running a competition for aspiring CG artists to win a place on a 3D training course run by Escape Studios as well as a work placement with Oscar-winning visual effects company The Mill. There are also a bunch of other prizes up for grabs.
Details of the competition, including how to enter and other information are available at http://www.escapestudios.com/cgwhiz/index.html.
It would be great to see some more entries before the competition closes this Friday 30th October!
All the best,
Claire
