Award-winning Manchester charity, Action for Sustainable Living, is offering a 3 month voluntary internship for a Media and Communications Officer. The positions is 1 -2 days per week based at their Hulme office.
This internship is primarily to increase AfSL’s public profile by generating media coverage of its projects and achievements. This will involve developing contacts with specific publications so that AfSL’s work is publicised in key geographical areas, establishing AfSL as a household name in the field of sustainability and generating media interest in ‘green’ topics in general.
The successful candidate will be required to: update, maintain and develop a data base of media contacts and investigate online opportunities for AfSL; develop ability to understand what stories are newsworthy and to spot media opportunities for AfSL; draft and produce press releases and articles; handle enquiries from the press; develop a particular focus on local media, often adapting “national” stories for local papers and radio stations; attend and cover events that are media worthy and organize photocalls; become familiar with sustainability issues in so far as they relate to your work; involve office volunteers who can eventually take over some or all of the tasks identified in this job description and undertake other duties appropriate to the role.
Applicants must possess: good written and verbal communication skills; ability to write clear concise copy in standard English; interest and knowledge of the Media and sustainability issues; thorough knowledge and confidence using MS and other software packages including the Internet; able to use initiative but also work as part of a team; ability to absorb information quickly and pass it on to others in an easily accessible and understandable way.
This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience within a communications role and in the charitable sector. Food and travel expenses will be reimbursed. The internship will be fully supported by the AfSL team.
