Next week (Tuesday 19 – Friday 23 August 2008) the International Young Professionals Summit will be taking place at Chancellors Hotel & Conference Centre Manchester (in Owens Park).
The aim of the Summit is to bring together change-makers and young professionals for networking, capicity building and information sharing around the topic of the Millenium Development Goals. Specific topics include:
- Governance, economy and education
- Women and gender equality
- Healthcare and HIV/AIDS
- Environmental sustainability
The agenda includes:
- Keynote address via videolink by Dr. Jeffrey Sachs, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia University and Director of the UN Millenium Project, and repeatedly named one of Time Magazine’s ‘100 Most Influential People in the World’.
- Delegate led panels, workshops and peer learning sessions (see the full programme).
This would be a fantastic opportunity, particularly for anyone interested in development as a career. This sort of activity can be put on your CV even though it is not a job and will be something interviewers are bound to be very interested to hear about. The Summit takes places in different locations round the world each year so this is likely to be the only time it is local.
10 heavily subsidised places are on offer for suitable delegates in the Manchester area. Instead of a daily rate of £285 they are offering these places for £125 for the whole Summit! Time is short and places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis so explore the Summit website and if you are interested e-mail: iypf@iypf.org as soon as possible.
If £125 is beyond your budget you can attend small sections of the conference by paying on the door. The keynote address by Dr. Sachs for example would cost £5.
