Civil Service Fast Stream

One of my colleagues Elizabeth (who readers of the Postgraduate blog will know) visited HM Treasury this week to find out the latest news and advice about the Fast Stream. If you have never heard of the Fast Stream it is the graduate route into working for the government and encompasses such varied departments as the Diplomatic Service (working in British embassies abroad), the Home Office, and GCHQ (miltary and security intelligence).

One interesting fact Elizabeth picked up was that over a third of successful applicants are ’second-jobbers’ (which is to say graduates who have not applied straight from university but have done something else first). It is a career where maturity and experience are an asset, so may be perfect for career changers. If you don’t pass first time, don’t be put off, maybe you should get out in the world of work for a while and try again in a year or two?

Elizabeth has blogged in detail about her visit and how to apply, so if you might be interested check it out. Applications for the 2009 scheme will open on September 15th.
