We often get enquiries from graduates about dress codes for interview. Obviously each organisation will have it’s own dress code, depending on the nature of their business, whether or not they are client facing, the impression they want to give to people etc. However, as a general rule of thumb, interviews do tend to be formal occasions. It’s safer to err on the side of caution and opt for traditional business wear. That doesn’t necessarily mean a suit but if you are seriously job hunting, then investing in one might be worth considering. You can’t really go wrong in a suit but failing this, then a smart shirt, trousers and tie for the boys and a smart top/blouse, skirt or trousers for the girls. It doesn’t necessarily mean boring either. For those who watched this year’s Apprentice, Lucinda certainly had her own unqiue style which reflected her personality but which was still appropriate and smart.
It is important to feel comfortable, so you still feel like you and not like you’ve borrowed something from your mum or dad to wear for the day but comfortable doesn’t unfortunatley mean jeans or Uggs! Just think smart and you’ll be fine.
Oh and girls, if you don’t normally wear make-up, don’t feel you have to. Again, you need to feel comfortable and confident.
As our great British summer has let us down again, the shops are starting to fill up with their Autumn collections and it shouldn’t be too hard to find something appropriate to wear. Happy shopping.
